The model 1.01 is most known because it is the shuttle which made the orbital flight. The construction of this shuttle, the first of a series of 5 shuttles (of which only 2 were completed), started in 1986.
Built in its almost totality in Moscow it was transported in Baïkonour by plane (VMT). Initially named Baikal it was renamed in Buran few weeks before its first flight. On 15 November 1988 it made its only single flight which consisted of 2 rotations around the Earth, then saftely landed on the aerodrome of the cosmodrome. The following year it was sent in Paris (Le Bourget) for an aeronautical exhibition on the Antonov 225.
It remained stored a long time in a air-conditioned hangar (site 112) on Energia (the same model which had been used for the interface tests with OK-MT), when in May 2002 the roof of this one fell in destroying Buran-Energia and by killing 7 workmen.
